Vikie Shanks wins at Best magazine awards

Vikie Shanks, the author of the inspirational memoir Unravelled, was a winner at the star-studded Best Bravest Women Awards 2014. Below is the live-blog transcript of Vikie’s proud moment:

19:59: Ruth introduces our next winner… Vikie Shanks was left with seven children – six of whom are autistic – when her husband tragically committed suicide and left her with £1 million worth of debts…

20.03: Carrie and David Grant bring Vikie up to the stage to present her award…

20.04: Carrie mentions her own children who suffer from autism and Asperger’s and says this is a story close to her and David’s hearts: “You are awe-inspiring,’ she tells Vikie. ‘Truly amazing.’

20.07: Vikie says she applauds her children for not ‘going off the rails’ and dedicating their lives to the right track which has made her trauma easier to deal with

20.09: ‘If i can make one more person understand what autistic children are going through and to help them achieve the incredible potential they have, that’s what I want to do.’

20.10 Massive applause as Vikie announces to the room that her fashion-designer daughter made her dress! She looks absolutely stunning.
