The Knights of Malta: Holy Warriors of the Crusades

The Knights of Malta tells the story of the Knights Hospitaller, the most successful and important of the medieval military-religious orders - how a small hospital in Jerusalem became a lynchpin in the crusades, ruling lands across Europe and defying the mighty Ottoman Empire, all the while providing treatment and hospitality for the constant flow of pilgrims to the Holy Land.

Written by two experts on the crusades and the military orders, and drawing on many fascinating episodes unknown to a popular audience, the book traces the Hospitallers from their origins in Jerusalem before the First Crusade through to the modern day, including their part in the crusades, their wars with the Turks, their American colonies, and even their brief time as an air force in the Cold War. It shows the important but overlooked role that this small band of knights had across Europe and the Near East in some of history’s best-known events, from the crusades to the Hundred Years War, the Reformation and the Napoleonic Wars.
