Jonathan McGovern

Jonathan McGovern is a professor at the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures, Xiamen University, China. He holds a BA (First Class) and MSt (Distinction) from the University of Oxford and a PhD from the University of York. He is a recognized expert on the history of sixteenth-century England, and the author of three books:

  • The Tudor Sheriff: A Study in Early Modern Administration (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2022).
  • The Little History of England (The History Press, 2024).
  • The King’s High Court: The Early Parliaments of Henry VIII (Boydell & Brewer, forthcoming in 2025).

He has published over 20 articles in academic journals such as The Historical Journal, Historical Research and History and won three prestigious essay prizes: the Sir John Neale Essay Prize (2018), the Gordon Forster Essay Prize (2018) and the Parliamentary History Essay Prize (2019). He was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2022.
