In My Extra Life, Alan White will tell the story of a national obsession. He will chart the growth of the video game market through a combination of anecdote and analysis, explaining its social and economic effects with help from interviewees who have worked as professionals in the games industry (and a few other people who just happen to have played games with him at some point).
But this isn’t a straight history of the industry. It’s also a witty chronicle of the decline and fall of one man: the author himself. It is the story of the professional, social and indeed sexual opportunities that he has missed as a result of his addiction to video games: the pastime that has made him the resentful failure he is today.
Alan White is News Editor at BuzzFeed UK. He has won the Royal Television Society Award for Scoop of the Year and been shortlisted for a British Journalism Award for Investigation of the Year. Prior to joining BuzzFeed his work appeared in the Observer, TLS, Private Eye and the Sunday Express. His series of articles, ‘The Shadow State', ran on the New Statesman website and were amongst its most read pieces that year.
